Video Contest Winners Use Humor, Creativity to Shed Light on Sugary Drink Consumption

It’s no secret that Americans’ excessive consumption of sugary drinks contributes to the growing obesity epidemic. This year, the Life’s Sweeter Challenge used Food Day as an opportunity to spread the health message about sugary drinks and have some good clean (though possibly sticky) fun.  In celebration of Food Day, we asked everyday people to send us their most creative, inspiring videos pouring out sugary beverages and making the case for cutting back.

We received over 80 submissions and today, we’re pleased to share the top three winners of the Pour One Out Video Contest.  In addition, we’ve included the ten videos that received honorable mentions on our Liquid Candy web page.  Share your favorite videos on Facebook and Twitter and be sure to “like” our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter @LifesSweeter to get more news from the Life’s Sweeter with Fewer Sugary Drinks Challenge.

Grand Prize--$1,000:  “Just Pour One Out” by Peter Sullivan & Family

The Sullivan Family of Nashville, Tennessee made a convincing case against sugary drinks with their original rap song.  The video was inspired by Peter Sullivan’s own personal struggle with soda consumption.  Sullivan was a self-proclaimed “soda-holic” and credits his kids, Caeley and Elijah, for convincing him to make a lifestyle change.  He now drinks at least a gallon of water each day and feels much better, physically, after making the switch.

2nd Place--$500:  “Pour One Out … And Fill One Up” by Laurel Frederick & Incline Elementary School

Frederick is an AmeriCorps member working at Incline Elementary School in Incline Village, Nevada.  5th grade students in her after school club collaborated to make this animated short that could just as easily be the dream sequence of a public health advocate.

3rd Place--$250:  “One For My Boy” by Dennis Nguyen

Dennis, an IT professional from St. Metairie, Louisiana, was inspired by childhood memories of the prominence of one particular sugary beverage in his neighborhood.  His clever video features a young street hustler that recounts the days of his youth, the glory of his recklessness and the loss of a dear friend.

Congratulations to our winners and thank you to all the contestants who shared the message to pour one out!
