The New York Foundling is thrilled to be partnering with The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and Bolthouse Farms on this year’s Food Day event in the Bronx. The partnership will entail construction and development of a learning garden at our charter school in the South Bronx, Haven Academy. The garden will serve as a living classroom where our children can learn, hands-on, how to grow healthy food and eat well. This is a particularly essential lesson for our students in the South Bronx because of the incredibly high rates of malnutrition present there. Dubbed the "Bronx Paradox," the South Bronx has one of the highest obesity rates, as well as one of the highest hunger rates in the entire nation. A renewed focus on the importance of healthy eating and family nutrition through our Food Day event will go a long way to reversing this sad trend.
We’re crafting a fantastic event around the unveiling of the garden on October 24 that will involve famed celebrity chefs Dan Barber and Ellie Krieger doing an interactive lesson/demonstration with our students. It’s going to be a wonderful day for the Haven kids, many of who come from the most impoverished congressional district in the U.S. By creating a lasting and tangible learning garden accompanied by in-depth healthy eating lessons and family nutrition seminars, we hope to provide our students with the knowledge, skills, and environment required to make healthier choices and change the way they eat...for life.
Note: This event is not open to the Public. The media will be covering the event, so please look for coverage at www.nyfoundling.org/foodday.
