    This quiz is fun and informative. I was dismayed, however, by the use of the phrase “rule of thumb” on the herb question. “Rule of thumb” derives from an English law that says it is allowable for a man to beat his wife with a stick as long as the stick is no thicker than his thumb. Please join in the effort to eliminate this phrase from our vocabulary!

    I really liked the info on packaging and production. Sticking to a whole foods philosophy seems more important than buying local produce. Good news given I live in New England so fresh produce is very limited in the winter.

    got the pests one wrong — I spend way too much time on invasive species to consider ‘pests’ a natural part of the system. Parasites/predators, yes … but to me the word ‘pest’ implies something seriously out of balance. A few of the others I could argue as well. With the right system, small amounts of meat/bones compost pretty well. Orange peels may not smell or attract predators, but they do take FOREVER to break down.

    Depends on where you are composting. In Seattle through our municipal composting system you CAN compost meat and bones.

    It depends upon the pest. Many of the worst ones are introduced—here in WI we are dealing with the Japanese beetle, (Asian) emerald ash borer, (Asian) spotted-wing Drosophila, multi-colored Asian lady beetle, and we are on the lookout for a few more. All of these are tremendously disruptive—sure, eventually the ecosystem will reach a new balance, but it may take decades or more.

    As a chef and K-8 nutrition educator I am always getting kids to try new flavors of foods and giving them food knowledge for lifetime. Fair Trade symbol was new for me. Happy National Food Day Everyone!!!

    As a chef I try and keep up with food issues. The Fair Trade symbol is new to me and the information on the PLUs code system is something that I will use regularly from now on.

    This is a really great conversation starter! Lots of great facts. However…I’m concerned about this statement “By comparison, overuse of additives such as pesticides and synthetic fertilizers—which are commonly used by farmers large and small—may harm the ecosystem.”

    Many farmers are incredible environmental stewards of the land and work hard NOT to harm the ecosystem they live in. They work ALL aspects of sustainability, including crop rotation, rain-water collection, and even GMO food helps prevent the need for pesticides by creating crops that are naturally impervious to pests that pesticides are usually used for.

    I took the test and found out that I’m very ignorant about the process that goes into producing food in general. I eat healthy by intuition but not by knowing all the details. It is helpful for a conversation with others but knowing this info does not make anyone a more environmentally friendly consumer.

    of course I’m taking this quiz in NZ, pests are our greatest danger to our native ecosytem, introduced plants, animals are creating havoc and we need to use enormous efforts to controll them.

    What the heck was my SCORE???? I know I missed 3 questions and that’s 80%, so a ‘B’ in an institutional school… but how does that compare on a bell curve? What are the norms? Feel kind of cheated.

    Planting seeds, pulling weeds, using non rain water are not naturally occurring events? A case could be made to disagree, humans are part of a natural ecosystem. I guess you could say we don’t always do everything right, however.
