Look on the label of most processed foods and you’re likely to see an alphabet soup of additives.  Chemicals like sucrose acetate isobutyrate, sodium erythorbate, and propyl gallate are often added to enhance flavor, color, or tenderness; act as a preservative; or perform other functions.  Today over 10,000 chemicals have been used in foods as additives!
